Yesterday evening, President Trump announced a host of new reciprocal tariffs on multiple countries.
And in after-hours trading, indexes took a big hit.

I’m writing this newsletter about 2.5 hours before the market opens.
And right now, S&P 500 futures are down 3.6%, while Nasdaq-100 futures are down 3.9%.
They’ve both made up a bit of ground – S&P 500 futures dipped as low as 4% while Nasdaq-100 futures fell as low as 4.7%.
But make no mistake, the highest probability scenario right now is more short-term pain ahead.
I will be very surprised if markets end up closing higher for the week.
The good news? The sharpness of the selloff is likely also setting up an explosive recovery – once we take Trump’s tariff tactics into account.

The scale of Trump’s tariffs is almost guaranteed to bring every country to the negotiation table.
Look, I’ll always be the first to say I could be wrong.
And I certainly can’t read Trump’s mind.
But my bet is that there’s no way he’s leaving these tariffs on for very long – not at this scale.
These tariffs will force these countries to the negotiation table, so that an actual fair trade deal can be finally worked out after decades.
When that happens, I expect the recovery to be swift and strong – and catch many traders off guard.
