RTX reported third-quarter 2026 results that beat Wall Street expectations, with adjusted earnings per share of $2.26 on sales of $24.97 billion, and the aerospace and defense company raised its full-year 2026 outlook for adjusted sales, adjusted EPS and free cash flow, according to the company's October 20 earnings release.

Reported sales of $25.0 billion were up 11 percent versus the prior year and up 12 percent organically, RTX said. GAAP EPS came in at $1.89, which included $0.26 of acquisition accounting adjustments and $0.11 of restructuring and other significant or non-recurring items, per the company's release carried on PR Newswire. Adjusted net income of $3.1 billion was up 34 percent from a year earlier.

What Drove the Quarter

RTX attributed the adjusted net income gain to $1.1 billion of adjusted segment operating profit growth "across all three segments," according to the company's release. The release did not break out individual segment revenue or margin figures, so the relative contribution of each business to the quarter's growth cannot be quantified beyond the company's statement that profit grew across all three segments.

Of that $1.1 billion in segment profit growth, $0.4 billion was tied to recovery of tariff-related costs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, the company said. That IEEPA recovery also added $0.25 to adjusted EPS for the quarter and contributed roughly $0.3 billion to operating cash flow, which totaled $2.9 billion; free cash flow for the quarter was $2.1 billion, per RTX's release.

Record Backlog, New Defense Awards

RTX reported a record company backlog of $340 billion, split between $176 billion of commercial work and $164 billion of defense work. The company said it received more than $81 billion of new commercial and defense awards during the quarter. RTX Chairman and CEO Chris Calio said, "Demand for our products remains robust with over $81 billion of new commercial and defense awards, resulting in a record backlog of $340 billion," according to stockstory.org's coverage of the release. Among specific wins, the company cited Tomahawk and AMRAAM multi-year undefinitized production contracts awarded in the quarter.

Guidance Raise and Management Commentary

RTX again lifted its full-year 2026 outlook for adjusted sales, adjusted EPS and free cash flow. Calio said, "Given our performance year to date, we are again raising our full year outlook for adjusted sales, adjusted EPS, and free cash flow. We remain focused on increasing output, optimizing our cost structure, and investing in new technologies to support our customers and drive continued growth," according to the company's release. The release did not provide a quantified breakdown separating how much of the new full-year guidance stems from underlying operational performance versus the tariff-cost recovery captured in the quarter, beyond noting that the IEEPA recovery contributed to the specific profit, EPS and cash flow figures disclosed for Q3. RTX also cautioned that adjusted sales, adjusted EPS and free cash flow are non-GAAP measures and that forward-looking reconciliations to GAAP figures are not available without unreasonable effort.

Versus Consensus and Share Reaction

Measured against analyst estimates, the results came in well ahead on both lines. Stockstory.org reported the adjusted EPS of $2.26 beat analyst estimates of $1.78 by 27 percent, while revenue of $24.97 billion beat estimates of $24.16 billion by 3.3 percent. Separately, MarketBeat put the comparison versus a $24.11 billion revenue estimate, noting the top-line beat amounted to $855.79 million. CNBC's pre-market coverage referenced a slightly different consensus, citing LSEG estimates of $1.78 EPS on $24.08 billion of revenue.

Shares gained about 1 percent in premarket trading, according to CNBC. Stockstory.org reported the stock traded up 2.1 percent to $196.26 immediately after the report, up from a pre-earnings price of $193.78 cited by Yahoo Finance. Yahoo Finance also noted the stock was heading into earnings with an average analyst price target of $227.78, though that figure reflects individual analysts' estimates compiled before the report and is not a company forecast or a guarantee of future performance.

Interpreting those moves: the roughly 1 percent premarket gain cited by CNBC and the 2.1 percent move to $196.26 reported by stockstory.org immediately after the release suggest the market absorbed the headline beat favorably. A single session's move is not evidence of a sustained trend, and the gap between the post-earnings price and the average analyst target reflects views formed before this report rather than a market-confirmed destination.

Bottom Line

RTX's third quarter showed broad-based profit growth across its three segments, a record backlog split roughly evenly between commercial and defense work, and another round of upward guidance revisions, with tariff-cost recovery under IEEPA providing a measurable but partial boost to the quarter's EPS, operating profit and cash flow. The reported figures beat consensus estimates by a wide margin on EPS and a more modest one on revenue, and the stock moved higher in the hours after the release, though the extent to which the raised full-year outlook reflects durable operational improvement versus one-time cost recoveries was not fully detailed in the company's disclosed materials.
