Technology Leads While S&P 500 Advances
Defensives and Commodity-Linked Names Take the Hit While Tech Leads the Bounce
Consumer Staples and Materials sat at the bottom of the sector table Tuesday, while technology and communication services led the upside. The split was the story of the session: a tape leaning toward risk, with the defensive and commodity-linked corners left behind.
The broader tape still finished green on the big growth gauges. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite both climbed, with the Dow Jones the lone holdout among the major indexes, weighed down by Apple's post-earnings slide, as CNBC reported. Bitcoin and Ethereum both pushed higher too, in line with the risk-on tone that showed up across equities.

The Nasdaq did the heavy lifting for growth-oriented portfolios, while the Dow's red finish showed how much weight Apple alone can carry on that index when it stumbles. Crypto's gains lined up with the broader appetite for risk that showed up in tech and communication names.
Sector Performance
Consumer Staples and Materials anchored the bottom of the sector table, with Staples posting the session's largest decline and Materials just behind it. Technology and Communication Services topped the list as chip stocks and AI-adjacent names rebounded.
That chip strength lines up with Technology's position at the top of the sector table.
Weakness was not confined to the defensives. Financials, Consumer Discretionary, and Energy all finished lower as well, showing that the red side of the tape stretched across a wide swath of the market rather than a single corner of it. Apple weighed on the Dow separately, CNBC noted, after the company's disappointing gross margin forecast tied to rising memory costs sent its shares lower.
What Moved the Market Today
The session carried a split personality. On one hand, chip and AI-linked names clawed back some of their recent losses, lifting the Nasdaq and giving growth investors something to cheer after a rough stretch. On the other, Apple's margin warning and the slide in Staples and Materials showed that not every corner of the market got the memo on risk-on.
Bill Ackman added his own commentary to the day's mood, telling CNBC he worries the stock market is broken and that trading has gone back to "casino-type markets," citing the amount of leverage in the system. He said those same market dislocations have given his fund the chance to buy bargains, pointing to past purchases of Microsoft and Amazon, even as he questioned whether the broader pattern is good for the country.
Midterm election results also hovered over the session. CNBC reported that prediction markets were leaning toward a Democratic sweep of Congress, a scenario analysts said could pressure AI and defense stocks if it plays out, while a Republican hold could spark a short-term relief rally. Wolfe Research's Tobin Marcus told CNBC that investors have shown "begrudging acceptance" of a possible Democratic sweep without positioning strongly for it, and that the firm shares the view that polling is likely overstating Democratic strength.
Looking Ahead: Next Trading Day
Wednesday brings two separate storylines together. Traders will wake up to midterm election results, which CNBC reported could pressure AI and data-center-linked stocks if Democrats sweep both chambers, or spark a short-term rally if Republicans hold on. Layered on top of that is the FOMC rate decision, a high-impact event that could add its own volatility regardless of how the election outcome lands.
The sources in hand do not set expectations for the Fed's decision, so traders should expect headlines on both fronts to move markets quickly once they land. Given how Staples and Materials got left behind Tuesday while tech ran, sector rotation looks like it could stay in focus into Wednesday's session too.
